About Martin Collins

Martin Collins, the industry leader in equine surfaces

Martin Collins began developing innovative, synthetic surfaces for equestrian use over 30 years ago.

Today Martin Collins Enterprises is the industry leader and innovator in synthetic surfaces. Our aim is to continue to manufacture the best synthethic surfaces in the world which allow the horse to work to the best of its ability with the least risk of injury.

As a working pupil with Alison and Alan Oliver, Martin gained permission to ride in adult show jumping classes aged 15. He later worked in yard maintenance for Dick Stilwell and trained his own grade A jumpers, together with those owned by clients.

In order to subsidise his riding, Martin soon became involved in underpinning and technical building work for companies, including Windsor Safari Park and Berni Inns.  This led to initial experiments which mixed PVC with silica sand, aimed at mimicking turf.

Work included adding bitumen, UV light protectors and varying types of latex and using 10 different agents to create a new coating solution.  The aim was for each imprint left by the horse to spring back.  The resulting Pacemaker surface fuelled additional research into recycled products that would create surfaces at an acceptable cost.
